Maverick Wellness Initiative
The Maverick Wellness Initiative is a brand new, university-wide health literacy campaign spearheaded by GMT in partnership with the UTA Division of Student Affairs. This week-long series of events is designed to engage, educate, and empower students with the tools and knowledge to take charge of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By bringing together key departments such as the UTA Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD), and Relationship Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention (RVSP), the initiative unites efforts across campus to create a stronger and more health-literate student body.
Each day of the week features a different theme. The week kicks off with “Mavericks Take Charge,” an interactive event where students can connect with campus wellness resources through games, health trivia, and giveaways. “Mindful Mavericks” follows with an evening focused on mental health awareness through a student and faculty panel featuring CAPS staff and licensed professionals. On Wednesday, the “Maverick Wellness Fair” transforms the Library Mall into a hands-on learning experience with booths covering topics such as sexual health, drug use, CPR, overdose prevention, and health trivia.
Thursday’s “Maverick Med Check” focuses on preventative care, health screenings, and vaccine awareness. Students receive guidance on navigating health insurance and recognizing when to seek care. The Tarrant County Public Health Department will be on site providing free vaccines and boosters to all students who are interested, helping increase access to preventative care across campus. Newly vaccinated participants receive double entries into the week-long raffle. The initiative concludes on Friday with the “Maverick Block Party” at Brazos Park, a celebration of wellness and community complete with food, games, music, and prizes, in collaboration with other pre-medical organizations.
The Maverick Wellness Initiative reflects GMT’s commitment to community-centered healthcare and student development. It is more than a series of events—it is a call to action that brings together students, organizations, and university leaders in a shared mission to promote health literacy and campus-wide wellness.
